Lido History!

The well known Alcove Lido at Fishponds was originally a clay pit owned by the Fishponds and Bedminster Brick & Tile Co., situated on a ten acre site, south of Fishponds Road, to the rear of No. 466. The extraction of the clay for brick-making commenced around 1880 and was considerable. The clay was loaded onto drams and tranferred to the works for processing.

The company excavated the clay at Fishponds untill they went down deep enough to hit the local water table level, uncovering a vigorous spring in the process. As it proved impossible to get rid of the water in sufficiant quantities, so the pit started to fill and the work had to be abandoned. The company went into liquidation in 1908, while still retaining ownership of the land.

The flooded clay pit was used by an angling club in 1913, then purchased by a local builder, Mr H.E. Green, who built a pavilion, changing rooms, diving boards, sunbathing terraces, and so on, and opened the Alcove Lido in 1934 - it became a great success. by the 1970's the popularity of the lido waned and the old pit was filled in and by 1980 its new owner sold the site to Barrett Homes who built Marina Gardens, a series of flats and maisonettes, on the reclaimed land. Today, the floating pub/restaurant has gone and all that remains of the lido is a pond used by an angling club.
